24/7discipline, a lifetime of dedication, nerves of steel... A few reasons right there why only a select few make it in boxing – but Omar Estrada Diaz has already checked them off his to-do list. At 19, he’s just made the switch from amateur champion to pro – thanks in no small part to the fact that boxing is practically in his blood.

"My mom and dad used to practice boxing back in Mexico – they knew it was a sport that involved hard work and dedication and discipline,” he says. His parents’ values clearly had an impact; between them, Omar and his siblings boast a slew of amateur championship titles.

Boxing since early childhood means that Omar is not only in peak physical condition, but has likely had a head start on the psychological side of competitive sports, too – just in time to turbo-charge his professional career.

“Nerves are a normal thing, but they can make or break you in the ring. I have learned how to control them,” he says. “I don’t worry about my competition, because I know how hard I work.” He’s not exaggerating – for Omar, a typical day involves waking up, running in the morning, strength and conditioning and then boxing training.

He has a boxing gym on his driveway at home in Hillsboro, Oregon, “so I can pretty much train 24/7,” and calls this “a luxury I couldn’t live without.” Epic hard work a luxury? It’s a curious mindset, but maybe one we could all learn from as we watch Omar from the sidelines, pummeling his way towards each of his goals: “Signing one of the best boxing promotions in the world. Trying to give my family a better life. Trying to reach my dreams, day by day.” Watch this space…
